Choose an official starting point
These four official routes address different kinds of debt help. Start with the place connected to your obligation, residence, property or proceeding, then confirm the exact procedure and eligibility.
| Jurisdiction | Starting route | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Canada, including Ontario | Federal consumer guidance on settlement companies | Provincial provider rules and the separate federal insolvency route. Ontario is not a rule for every province. |
| England and Wales | FCA advice and authorization guidance | The exact firm’s permissions and the licensed practitioner for any formal insolvency proposal. |
| Scotland | Accountant in Bankruptcy’s Debt Arrangement Scheme resources | Scottish approved-adviser and procedure requirements, separate from other UK permissions. |
| France | Banque de France intake for people unable to meet their debts | Applicable eligibility, residence, debts and submission route; an application does not guarantee relief. |
Do not translate the label into a promised result
In Canada, a commercial settlement service and a formal insolvency procedure are different routes. Creditors need not accept a settlement offer. Provincial rules can affect provider registration, contracts and fees; ask the relevant authority rather than importing a U.S. fee rule.
Within the UK, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have distinct debt procedures. The FCA warns about lead generators that steer people toward products or imply government backing. Check the adviser’s actual permissions and obtain alternatives before committing.
In France, the Banque de France describes a free overindebtedness procedure and both online and paper routes. Its online method has specific conditions, and supporting documents are required. Keep originals and submit copies as instructed. A private consultant’s marketing label should not be confused with the public process.
These examples explain why one country’s reporting period, limitation rule or payment-plan name cannot simply be translated into another country’s law.
Check the local rules before committing
What this page covers
Selected official entry points for Canada/Ontario, England and Wales, Scotland and France. The linked sources describe different provider, advice or application functions. No provider has been checked or matched.
What still needs local research
Full product rules, court procedure, limitation, reporting, tax, asset protection and eligibility in each place. Ask the local regulator or adviser to identify the rules for your actual debt and location before signing or paying.
- Which exact legal system governs the debt and any case?
- Is the adviser permitted to do this activity for someone in your location?
- Are the fees and client-money arrangements lawful there?
- What does completion release, and what remains?
- Will another country need to recognize the result?
If you have moved or hold assets abroad, use the cross-border guide as well. International consumer-policy principles do not themselves make a foreign judgment, debt release or insolvency order effective everywhere.
