The useful starting point

Do not ignore court papers or treat a collection dispute as a court response.

If you have court papers

Read the papers and respond by the required deadline. Ignoring a debt lawsuit can lead to a default judgment. A collection dispute, creditor call or negotiation does not replace a court response.

If the notice concerns a home or vehicle

Contact the servicer or lender using verified details. If foreclosure, repossession or legal action is imminent, seek qualified help promptly. The contract, actual notice and local procedures matter.

Bring the notice, not just the balance

  • Keep all pages, attachments and the envelope.
  • Write down when and how the papers arrived, without assuming that starts a particular legal clock.
  • Identify the court or agency, case or account reference and the action requested.
  • Ask the court’s public information office or qualified local help about the applicable response. Do not post private case details into a public form.
