S_AZ PASS-14 — Payment, compromise, satisfaction, and necessary release
Arizona separates discharge of an obligation, filing a satisfaction with the court, releasing a recorded judgment lien, and ending particular enforcement proceedings. Those steps have different predicates and actors. The ordinary satisfaction statutes specify 40 days for Superior Court and justice-court civil judgments, and 30 days for small-claims judgments, after payment in full. Separately, the recorded-judgment-lien statute requires discharge of record immediately on payment or satisfaction. The longer filing periods do not establish permission to leave a satisfied recorded lien unreleased. C029–C040. azleg.gov+3
A settlement proposal, an accepted settlement, a payment instrument, money held by an intermediary, and an effective satisfaction are also different objects. Some instruments can legally discharge an obligation before the creditor receives cash; an ordinary uncertified check generally has a different effect. Consequently, neither “no cash received means no discharge” nor “a check marked paid in full ends the judgment” is a sound universal rule. C012–C025. azleg.gov+2
This report establishes the bounded public-law gateway. It does not establish any actual judgment balance, settlement authority, payment, satisfaction, lien status, or right to collect.
Access, identifiers, and evidence conventions
- Fresh access date: October 27, 2026, in both UTC and Pacific time.
- Logged research-clock observations bracket the source-access work from 2026-10-27 17:26:58 UTC / 10:26:58 PDT through 2026-10-27 17:53:09 UTC / 10:53:09 PDT.
- Exact opening time for an individual source is UNKNOWN. The interval is not a claim that each document was opened at either endpoint.
- F27 below means a body or identified portion was freshly read on that date. P27 means partial reading, I27 index/discovery only, and X27 an unsuccessful retrieval. Publication, amendment, and form-revision dates are separate.
- Short references such as S001 and C001 mean S_AZ-P14-S001 and S_AZ-P14-C001.

- “High” confidence describes the identified text, holding, or arithmetic—not an actual party’s eligibility or the completeness of subsequent history.
The Legislature’s displayed compilation says it includes the 57th Legislature’s second regular session, but also explains that the compilation generally reflects law effective January 1 following the latest session. I therefore checked the material satisfaction enactments and selected related amendments separately; the compilation label alone is not the effective-date analysis. These matrices are the substantive findings as well as the atomic claim register. Each row identifies the relevant actor, predicate, consequence, evidence, and remaining limit.
1.1 Legal objects, authority, agreement, and payment instruments
| Claim ID |
Actor and predicate |
Bounded proposition, required step, or consequence |
Exact evidence; confidence and remaining limit |
| S_AZ-P14-C001 |
Parties evaluating alleged satisfaction |
Payment, discharge, satisfaction entry, lien release, and writ disposition must be tested separately. Cash custody alone does not establish every legal effect. |
I: S035, pp. 576–578; S048, Discussion/Disposition; S003, §33-964(E); S004, §47-3310. High distinction; actual documents and recipients absent. |
| S_AZ-P14-C002 |
Party asserting common-law accord and satisfaction |
The accord requires proper subject matter, competent parties, assent, and consideration; satisfaction requires performance of the accord. |
H: S037, pp. 319–320; S040, ¶24. High holding; a fixed judgment and proposed discount do not themselves prove these elements. |
| S_AZ-P14-C003 |
Parties to a written compromise |
A written contract imports consideration; that is not an irrebuttable finding that a particular release is enforceable. |
T/H: S007, §44-121; S040, ¶41. High text; authority, defenses, and actual consideration remain factual questions. |
| S_AZ-P14-C004 |
Parties exchanging releases |
Mutual releases of known and unknown claims can furnish consideration; in Best Choice, that did not resolve disputed agency authority. |
H: S040, ¶¶40–42, 45. High bounded holding; no universal validity finding for boilerplate releases. |
| S_AZ-P14-C005 |
Attorney or other agent purporting to compromise |
Actual authority or a legally sufficient alternative must be shown. Attorney apparent authority rests on the client’s manifestations and reasonable reliance; retention alone is insufficient. The enforcing party bears the reasonable-reliance burden. |
H: S036, ¶¶16–20, printed pp. 6–8/PDF indexes 5–7. High; authority to receive, compromise, and release must not be conflated. azcourts.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C006 |
Parties disputing an agreement governed by Civil Rule 80(a) |
The rule recognizes a writing; an oral agreement in open court entered in the minutes; or an agreement before a mediator/judicial officer memorialized before a certified reporter or by audio/video. A mediated agreement also requires the specified permission to disclose its terms for approval or enforcement. |
T: S017, Rule 80(a)(1)–(3), p. 3/PDF 2, effective January 1, 2024. High adopted text; forum and actual record held. azcourts.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C007 |
Client disputing counsel’s authority rather than settlement terms |
Robertson held that former Rule 80(d) did not require separate written client assent to counsel’s written agreement. It distinguished disputed existence/terms from authority and disapproved contrary Canyon Contracting reasoning. |
H: S036, ¶¶13–15, 22. High; now read with renumbered Rule 80(a) and its 2024 amendment. The quoted underlying cases were not independently opened. |
| S_AZ-P14-C008 |
Justice-court parties making litigation agreements |
The read Justice Rule 103(c) requires an out-of-court agreement to be written and signed by parties or attorneys, or an oral in-court agreement documented in court records. |
T: S020, printed p. 8/PDF 9. High historical adopted text; current complete consolidation remains partial. Civil Rule 80’s added mediation route is not automatically imported. |
| S_AZ-P14-C009 |
Assignee claiming an obligation free of prior defenses |
Section 44-144 preserves defenses/setoffs existing at notice of assignment, subject to its negotiable-paper exception and §44-145. This does not itself reopen adjudicated merits or establish payment to a former creditor as effective. |
T/I: S007, §§44-144–145. High text; judgment assignment, notice, preclusion, and the specialized consumer-writing conditions remain held. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C010 |
Joint obligors |
Section 44-141 permits several liability and separate actions without automatically releasing unjoined obligors; its joined-party provision addresses the amount unsatisfied. A release of one obligor requires examination of its actual scope. |
T/I: S007, §44-141(A)–(B). High text; no universal cosigner-release conclusion. |
| S_AZ-P14-C011 |
A legally established surety paying because of suretyship |
Section 12-1643 can preserve the judgment for the paying surety and deem it assigned to that extent. Payment therefore does not invariably extinguish every enforceable obligation. |
T: S001, §§12-1642–1643, particularly §12-1643(A). High text; ordinary joint-obligor status is not automatically suretyship. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C012 |
Person invoking negotiable-instrument accord |
Article 3 applies to qualifying instruments; money, Article 4A payment orders, and securities are excluded. An online payment or transfer is not automatically a §47-3311 instrument. |
T: S004, §§47-3102(A), 47-3104(A)–(B), (E)–(H). High text; payment mechanism and instrument terms held. |
| S_AZ-P14-C013 |
Proponent under Article 3 |
Article 3’s good-faith definition requires honesty in fact and observance of reasonable commercial standards of fair dealing. |
T: S004, §47-3103(A)(4). High; do not substitute a different general definition. |
| S_AZ-P14-C014 |
Party required to “prove” Article 3 predicates |
The incorporated definition uses a more-probable-than-not standard. |
T: S004, §§47-3103(A)(10), 47-1201(B)(8). High; no universal clear-and-convincing requirement for §47-3311. |
| S_AZ-P14-C015 |
Court evaluating a full-satisfaction statement |
Conspicuousness turns on whether a reasonable person ought to notice the term; the court decides that issue. |
T: S004, §47-1201(B)(10). High; a particular notation has not been evaluated. |
| S_AZ-P14-C016 |
Debtor asserting §47-3311 discharge |
The debtor must prove good-faith full-satisfaction tender by instrument, an unliquidated claim or bona fide dispute, and claimant payment of the instrument. A conspicuous full-satisfaction statement is also required, subject to statutory exceptions. |
T: S004, §47-3311(A)–(B). High; merely disputing an already fixed judgment or writing “paid in full” does not establish the predicates. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C017 |
Organizational claimant |
The designated-recipient exception requires a sufficiently early conspicuous instruction and nonreceipt of the instrument/communication by that designated recipient. |
T: S004, §47-3311(C)(1), subject to (D). High; actual instructions and routing absent. |
| S_AZ-P14-C018 |
Claimant seeking statutory repayment exception |
Tendering repayment within 90 days after payment of the instrument can prevent discharge. The exception is unavailable to an organization that sent the specified designation notice. |
T: S004, §47-3311(C)(2), subject to (D). High; not 90 days after mailing, deposit, or discovering a notation. |
| S_AZ-P14-C019 |
Claimant or directly responsible agent with knowledge |
Proven knowledge of the full-satisfaction tender within a reasonable time before collection was initiated can establish discharge notwithstanding subsection C. |
T: S004, §47-3311(D). High; knowledge and timing are unproved. |
| S_AZ-P14-C020 |
Recipient attempting to reserve rights |
Section 47-1308’s reservation-of-rights rule does not apply to accord and satisfaction. |
T: S004, §47-1308(B). High; crossing out language is not a universal escape. |
| S_AZ-P14-C021 |
Obligee taking a certified, cashier’s, or teller’s check |
Unless otherwise agreed, taking such an instrument for an obligation discharges it to the equivalent-money extent, while preserving specified indorser liability. |
T: S004, §47-3310(A). High; acceptance and contrary agreement matter. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C022 |
Obligee taking an ordinary uncertified check or note |
Unless otherwise agreed, the obligation is generally suspended. Payment/certification or dishonor produces the consequences specified in §47-3310(B); possession, entitlement, loss, and third-party-instrument qualifications matter. |
T: S004, §47-3310(B)(1)–(4). High; pending-check cash is not posted as final payment in the examples. |
| S_AZ-P14-C023 |
Person making payment on an instrument |
Payment must satisfy §47-3602’s recipient and obligor conditions. A person entitled to enforce an instrument need not be its owner, but injunction and wrongful-possession exceptions matter. |
T: S004, §§47-3301, 47-3602. High; this is not a rule establishing ownership of an ordinary judgment. |
| S_AZ-P14-C024 |
Person entitled to enforce an instrument |
Intentional cancellation or a signed renunciation can discharge the instrument with or without consideration under §47-3604. |
T: S004, §47-3604. High; instrument discharge is not automatically a court satisfaction or recorded-lien release. |
| S_AZ-P14-C025 |
Debtor tendering payment |
Tender can have consequences under §47-3603, including specified recourse-party and interest effects. An unaccepted tender is not necessarily legally irrelevant, but no universal satisfaction follows. |
T/I: S004, §47-3603(A)–(C). High text; full tender/interest application deferred. |
| S_AZ-P14-C026 |
Party allocating a payment among principal, interest, and charges |
No universal allocation priority is established by this pass. The governing agreement, order, applicable law, and credited transactions must support allocation. Portfolio purchase consideration is not debtor cash. |
G/I: S004, payment provisions; S035–S040; models M01–M04. Exact allocation authority remains held. |
| S_AZ-P14-C027 |
Party seeking rescission for mutual mistake |
Emmons applied contract principles, a clear-and-convincing rescission burden, and risk-allocation limits. Its settlement allocated the risk of unknown trial error, defeating that challenge. |
H: S039, ¶¶8–25. High bounded holding; not a universal burden for every satisfaction dispute. |
| S_AZ-P14-C028 |
Party asserting accord from ambiguous negotiations or writings |
Glenn treated conflicting evidence about the asserted accord as a fact issue; an ambiguous payment-related writing did not establish accord as a matter of law. |
H: S038, pp. 240–242. High; specialized employment facts and historical law remain bounded. |
1.2 Satisfaction entry, recorded release, correction, and remedies
| Claim ID |
Actor and predicate |
Required step, clock, or civil consequence |
Exact evidence; confidence and hold |
| S_AZ-P14-C029 |
Prevailing party; Superior Court judgment paid in full |
File satisfaction in Superior Court within 40 days after payment in full. |
T: S001, §12-1567(A). High; actual full-payment event absent. |
| S_AZ-P14-C030 |
Prevailing party; justice-court civil judgment paid in full |
File satisfaction in justice court within 40 days after payment in full. |
T: S002, §22-247(A). High; no demand-trigger substitution. |
| S_AZ-P14-C031 |
Prevailing party; small-claims judgment paid in full |
File satisfaction in the small-claims division within 30 days after payment in full. |
T: S002, §22-525(A). High; not the ordinary civil 40-day period. |
| S_AZ-P14-C032 |
Opposing party; failure to file or inability to locate prevailing party after diligence |
Superior/justice civil motion must include an affidavit evidencing payment and, when necessary, diligence. A granted motion deems the judgment satisfied. |
T: S001, §12-1567(B); S002, §22-247(B). High; proof, service, and ruling not supplied. |
| S_AZ-P14-C033 |
Small-claims opposing party seeking compelled satisfaction |
Section 22-525(B) authorizes the motion; subsection C requires transfer to justice-court civil proceedings upon filing. Unlike the other two statutes, its text does not expressly repeat their affidavit requirement. |
T: S002, §22-525(B)–(C). High; applicable proof/form requirements still matter. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C034 |
Court deciding an ordinary statutory satisfaction motion |
A hearing is discretionary. The court may require the moving party to post a bond in the amount of the judgment. |
T: S001, §12-1567(C)–(D); S002, §§22-247(C)–(D), 22-525(C)–(D). High; bond face is not a filing fee or automatic expense. |
| S_AZ-P14-C035 |
Party alleging late ordinary satisfaction filing |
The ordinary A–D provisions read do not specify automatic damages, a daily penalty, or automatic fee shifting for missing their filing period. That does not establish absence of other remedies. |
T/G: S001–S002, cited sections. High limited textual observation; other asserted causes/sanctions require separate authority. |
| S_AZ-P14-C036 |
Successful party in a contested contract action |
Section 12-341.01 permits, rather than universally requires, reasonable attorney fees. Its qualifications and amount limitation remain applicable. |
T/H: S001, §12-341.01(A)–(C); S036, ¶21. High; no automatic fee award on every satisfaction motion. |
| S_AZ-P14-C037 |
Creditor or creditor’s attorney; judgment has become a lien |
Immediately on payment or satisfaction, record satisfaction in the county where recorded and make the specified satisfaction notations in Superior Court dockets in each relevant county and the federal district-court docket. |
T: S003, §33-964(E). High; actual recording/docket inventory absent. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C038 |
Person recording a notice under §33-964 |
Mail the recorded notice to the judgment creditor whose lien is affected. |
T: S003, §33-964(D). High; delivery evidence absent. |
| S_AZ-P14-C039 |
Person relying on a statutory partial property release |
The specified partial release affects the identified property, not other real property; recording alone does not presume compliance with the underlying conditions. |
T: S003, §33-964(B)(6)–(7). High; the homestead procedure producing such a release is outside this pass. |
| S_AZ-P14-C040 |
Person presenting a document for recording |
Recording location, acknowledgment, format, and statutory exceptions require separate examination. A court-filing form is not itself a determination of recordability. |
T/I: S003, §§33-411, 33-961, 33-967; S006, §11-480. High text; particular recorder, document, acknowledgment exception, and charges held. |
| S_AZ-P14-C041 |
Nondebtor property owner mistakenly matched by name |
Written demand plus reasonable proof triggers delivery of a recordable release within 15 days after receipt and compliance with subsection A. |
T: S003, §33-968(A)–(B). High; this is not the ordinary paid debtor’s satisfaction clock. |
| S_AZ-P14-C042 |
Creditor improperly failing that wrong-person release duty |
Liability covers resulting damages, with a statutory presumption of at least $500. The prevailing party in a §33-968 action receives reasonable attorney fees. |
T: S003, §33-968(B), (D)–(E). High; improper failure, causation, prevailing status, and adjudication are not presumed. |
| S_AZ-P14-C043 |
Wrong-person owner seeking court release |
Serve the application on the creditor. On satisfactory proof, the court orders a recordable release or releases the lien by an order that may be recorded in the property’s county. |
T: S003, §33-968(C). High; no actual application or title conclusion. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C044 |
Party relying on a filed satisfaction |
Conelly treats satisfaction as prima facie evidence of payment or equivalent and a barrier to continued enforcement unless properly set aside. |
H: S035, pp. 576–577. High; exceptions and third-party interests matter. |
| S_AZ-P14-C045 |
Creditor challenging the satisfaction entry, rather than seeking relief from the judgment |
Conelly recognizes an equitable motion in the original action, governed by reasonable time/laches rather than automatically importing Rule 60’s six-month restriction. |
H: S035, pp. 577–578. High historical holding; no unilateral restoration of enforcement. |
| S_AZ-P14-C046 |
Creditor alleging failed consideration for conditional satisfaction |
Romero allowed satisfaction to be set aside pro tanto, preserving credit for money actually paid. |
H: S042, pp. 235–236. High narrow holding; actual condition, breach, and court relief must be proved. |
| S_AZ-P14-C047 |
Party relying on satisfaction of an already vacated judgment |
Brewer rejected dismissal of the underlying claim on its particular facts; it also recognized equitable limits where innocent third parties have relied on a satisfaction. |
H: S048, Discussion paragraphs beginning “While we agree,” “In Connelly,” and “Moreover”; Disposition. High; no universal right to undo a release. FindLaw |
| S_AZ-P14-C048 |
Party seeking relief from the judgment itself in Superior Court |
Civil Rule 60(b)(5) addresses satisfaction, release, or discharge; Rule 60(c) requires reasonable time and does not make the motion an automatic stay. The six-month restriction applies to specified other grounds. |
T: S016, Rule 60(b)(5), (c), printed pp. 173–174/PDF 205–206. High adopted text; complete current consolidation held. |
| S_AZ-P14-C049 |
Justice-court civil party seeking judgment relief |
Read Rule 141(c)(5) supplies the corresponding ground, reasonable-time requirement, and no-suspension provision. |
T: S020, printed p. 47/PDF 48. High adopted text; no transfer of Superior Court rule numbering or all later procedure. |
| S_AZ-P14-C050 |
Small-claims party seeking Rule 16 relief |
Rule 16(a)(4), (b)–(c) provides the ground and reasonable-time rule; the motion copy is delivered on filing day, and the other party has 15 days to respond. The motion does not suspend the judgment. |
T: S022, PDF 10–11. High text; the rule does not resolve how an attempted Rule 16 route interacts with §22-525’s mandatory transfer. |
| S_AZ-P14-C051 |
Party depositing money with a court; clerk holding it |
Civil Rule 67 and Justice Rule 146 require notice and permission/order; deposited property remains under court control. Custody and disposition records must be distinguished from adjudicated credit. |
T/I: S016, Rule 67(a)–(c), p. 186/PDF 218; S020, Rule 146(a)–(b), pp. 49–50/PDF 50–51. High text; particular deposit order held. azcourts.gov+1 |
1.3 Necessary enforcement cleanup
| Claim ID |
Actor and predicate |
Required step or bounded consequence |
Exact evidence; confidence and hold |
| S_AZ-P14-C052 |
Court, creditor, and garnishee classifying the proceeding |
Non-earnings money/property garnishment and earnings garnishment are separate statutory articles. Their cleanup provisions cannot be transferred merely because both use “garnishment.” |
T: S008, §§12-1570, 12-1570.01; S009, §§12-1598, 12-1598.01. High; no exemption formula is imported. |
| S_AZ-P14-C053 |
Non-earnings garnishee after required service |
Section 12-1578 restricts transfer of affected nonexempt property, subject to its qualifications. A private settlement proposal is not an identified statutory release order. |
T/I: S008, §12-1578(A). High text; actual writ/order and exemptions held. |
| S_AZ-P14-C054 |
Court entering a non-earnings garnishee judgment |
Section 12-1584 supplies application/objection adjudication routes and caps the garnishee judgment at the unpaid underlying amount, including qualifying accrued interest and awarded costs/fees. |
T: S008, §12-1584(A)–(B), (D). High; no unproved added charges. |
| S_AZ-P14-C055 |
Creditor and non-earnings garnishee after judgment |
Creditor delivers the judgment to debtor and garnishee; the garnishee transfers the adjudged amount immediately upon receipt. An order, its receipt, and actual transfer remain separate facts. |
T: S008, §12-1584(C). High; no actual transfer inferred. |
| S_AZ-P14-C056 |
Creditor seeking dismissal after garnishee answered |
The garnishee must receive notice and an opportunity to address costs and fees before dismissal. |
T: S008, §12-1582; S033, forms 12 and 13. High; satisfaction of the debtor’s judgment does not erase this procedural question. |
| S_AZ-P14-C057 |
Court; answer shows no nonexempt property and no timely objection |
Section 12-1581 requires judgment discharging the garnishee in that specified posture. |
T: S008, §12-1581. High; this is not the only possible discharge posture or a universal paid-debt rule. |
| S_AZ-P14-C058 |
Officer executing a judgment |
Execution proceeds exceeding judgment and costs must be returned to the debtor unless the court directs otherwise. |
T: S001, §12-1562(A). High; no express day-count deadline appears in that clause. azleg.gov |
| S_AZ-P14-C059 |
Earnings garnishee and creditor; continuing lien |
Section 12-1598.10(D) identifies events making the continuing lien invalid, including full satisfaction, vacation, expiration, release, a qualifying stay, or quashing. |
T: S009, §12-1598.10(D). High; no ordinary proposal is treated as an entered stay or completed satisfaction. |
| S_AZ-P14-C060 |
Earnings creditor preventing overcollection |
The creditor must take reasonable preventive action, give the specified written notice when the balance falls below twice the preceding two pay periods’ received nonexempt earnings, and instruct cessation when paid or notified that enough has been withheld. |
T: S009, §12-1598.12(D). High; sufficient withholding can trigger cessation before remittance. Reporting by judgment creditor |
| S_AZ-P14-C061 |
Earnings creditor after satisfaction or expiration |
Immediately file satisfaction or release of writ and deliver copies to garnishee, debtor, and another creditor who requested a copy in writing. |
T: S009, §12-1598.12(E). High; distinct from general 30/40-day filing periods. |
| S_AZ-P14-C062 |
Affected party alleging an earnings creditor’s statutory noncompliance |
Petition, notice, and hearing precede the §12-1598.13(A) consequences. Its mistake/inadvertence/excusable-neglect qualification matters; specified relief includes actual losses, qualifying fees/costs, and an additional $100–$1,000. |
T: S009, §12-1598.13(A). High; not an automatic general satisfaction penalty. |
| S_AZ-P14-C063 |
Reviewing court after reversal or modification |
Section 12-2103(B) authorizes ordered restitution of property or rights lost through the erroneous judgment. |
T: S001, §12-2103(B). High; no universal automatic refund or refund deadline established. |
| S_AZ-P14-C064 |
Party relying on a covenant not to execute |
Rager distinguished a covenant not to execute from release or satisfaction. Its joint-tort and historical-statute setting limits broader application. |
H: S041, pp. 189–192. High bounded holding. |
| S_AZ-P14-C065 |
Tort claimant seeking another recovery for the same adjudicated loss |
Edmond held that payment and satisfaction of the compensatory judgment barred the later claim in its joint-tortfeasor posture. |
H: S043, pp. 142–144. High; not a universal rule releasing contractual cosigners. |
| S_AZ-P14-C066 |
Tort claimant invoking later several-liability law |
Bridgestone rejected another recovery of the same fully compensated injury despite the changed tort-liability regime. |
H: S044, ¶¶6–14, 21–32. High; specialized tort boundary only. |
| S_AZ-P14-C067 |
Insured relying on absence of filed satisfaction |
Hamill found that omission immaterial to its UIM coverage issue after the stipulated settlement/payment. |
H: S045, ¶¶15–20. High narrow holding; not permission to disregard later ordinary satisfaction statutes. |
1.4 Enactment, current procedure, forms, models, and residual gaps

Laws 2026, chapter 194 added eviction-specific subsections E without changing the ordinary 40-day provisions. Approved June 19, filed June 22, effective September 12, 2026. Superior E uses “filed”; Justice E uses “filed and served.” |
T: S011, §§1–2/end; S012, 2026 row. High; those special fee/hearing consequences are not imported into ordinary consumer judgments. |
| S_AZ-P14-C070 |
The selected 2016 amendment and 2021 chapter 368 support the current recording formulation and subsection E placement. Chapter 368’s own clause makes it effective after December 31, 2021. |

What these opinions do—and do not—resolve
The strongest ordinary satisfaction authorities here are Conelly, Romero, and Brewer: they distinguish an operative judgment from its satisfaction entry and recognize fact-dependent relief from an entry. Robertson, Vance, Glenn, Emmons, and Best Choice supply agreement, authority, consideration, or rescission rules. Rager, Edmond, Bridgestone, and Hamill prevent overbroad statements about covenants, double recovery, and missing satisfaction filings; their specialized facts remain beside their holdings. C002–C007, C027–C028, C044–C047, C064–C067.
No source establishes that a debtor may unilaterally rewrite a final judgment, that a creditor may simply disregard an entered satisfaction, or that a disputed compromise automatically stays enforcement.
3. Four worked fictional models
These are separate hypothetical files. M03’s small-claims branch does not inherit M01’s amount. All dollars are USD. No actual court, account, creditor, debtor, payment, contract, or order is identified.
M01 — Ordinary judgment ledger and the difference between proposal and payment
Stipulated facts
An ordinary judgment’s authenticated ledger, frozen for this illustration, contains:
- Principal: $10,000.
- Lawfully included interest: $600.
- Allowed costs: $400.
- One actual, unreversed, properly credited payment: $2,000.
- No additional amount is stipulated as accruing during the illustrated interval.
Calculation
Plain text
Gross judgment components:
10,000 principal + 600 interest + 400 costs = 11,000 dollars
Aggregate remaining balance:
11,000 - 2,000 actual credit = 9,000 dollars
The $2,000 credit’s allocation is not supplied. Let:
Plain text
p = credit allocated to principal
i = credit allocated to interest
k = credit allocated to costs
p + i + k = 2,000
Remaining principal = 10,000 - p
Remaining interest = 600 - i
Remaining costs = 400 - k
Sum of remaining components = 9,000 dollars
There is no assumption that interest is paid first. The allocation requires the applicable agreement, order, or legal rule. C026, C080.
Positive branch: actual final payment
A properly authorized recipient actually receives and credits another $9,000, unreversed, and the frozen-balance assumption is legally correct:
Plain text
Total actual credited payments = 2,000 + 9,000 = 11,000
Remaining illustrated judgment = 11,000 - 11,000 = 0
The filing and recording questions then arise under C029–C040. A zero ledger does not prove that the satisfaction was filed, that every recorded lien was released, or that each outstanding writ was addressed.
Adverse branch: proposed payment only
A message proposes paying $9,000, but nothing is received or otherwise legally discharges the obligation:
Plain text
Additional actual credit = 0
Remaining illustrated balance = 9,000
An accepted qualifying instrument could change the legal result under C021–C024, even before cash collection. Accordingly, this branch stipulates only a proposal—not an accepted cashier’s check or other discharge event.
Held conclusions: lawful component amounts, later accrual, allocation, recipient authority, actual credit date, instrument classification, and court/recorder records. Whole-dollar inputs require no fractional-cent rounding.
M02 — Authorized $6,000 compromise of a $9,000 remainder
Stipulated facts
- Opening remainder: $9,000.
- Fictional written compromise dated May 4, 2026.
- The agreement’s validity, adequate consideration, parties’ authority, and applicable litigation-form requirements are stipulated for the positive arithmetic branch.
- It makes extinguishment of the remainder conditional on completed receipt of $6,000 by May 12, 2026.
- No separate accrued additions are assumed.
- This is a description of hypothetical conditions, not a drafted settlement clause.
Branch A: condition performed
Completed funds are received by the authorized recipient on May 8:
Plain text
Opening obligation 9,000
Actual cash payment -6,000
Residual before effective waiver 3,000
Effective conditional forgiveness -3,000
Remaining released obligation 0
Cash received 6,000
Noncash forgiveness 3,000
Total obligation accounted for 9,000
The creditor did not receive $9,000 cash. The $6,000 payment is not $3,000.
Legal treatment depends on C002–C007 and the actual agreement. Whether a particular compromised satisfaction supplies the payment-in-full trigger for every statutory filing provision was not authoritatively resolved in the post-2019 sources opened; the model does not silently substitute a new universal trigger.
Branch B: ordinary check still pending
An ordinary uncertified check for $6,000 is accepted but remains unpaid:
Plain text
Completed cash receipt = 0
Conditional forgiveness recognized in this model = 0
That is not a conclusion that the creditor may immediately enforce $9,000: §47-3310(B) may suspend the obligation while the check is pending. The actual agreement can also affect the result. C022.
Branch C: dishonor or reversal
The same check is dishonored, or a provisional $6,000 credit is fully reversed:
Plain text
Provisional credit +6,000
Reversal -6,000
Net actual credit 0
The stipulated receipt condition has not been performed. Enforcement consequences still depend on the instrument rules, agreement, any satisfaction already entered, and any necessary judicial relief. A creditor cannot treat a filed satisfaction as nonexistent merely by adjusting its ledger. C022, C044–C046.
Branch D: compromise-authority gap
If $6,000 is validly credited but the supposed discount was unauthorized:
Plain text
9,000 - 6,000 = 3,000 potentially remaining
That is an arithmetic branch, not a finding that $3,000 is enforceable. Apparent authority, ratification, other defenses, and the agreement’s status must be resolved. If the recipient lacked even receipt authority, whether any credit is legally due is itself held.
A “paid in full” check notation does not independently establish §47-3311’s disputed/unliquidated-claim predicate. C005, C016–C019, C081.
M03 — Payment-triggered filing periods, immediate recording, and a different demand statute
Stipulated facts
Three independent, otherwise eligible ordinary judgments—one in each court track—are actually paid in full on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. No factual disagreement exists about that payment date. No special closure or contrary order affects the illustrated endpoints.
The ordinary A–D provisions were already operative in April 2026. The later 2026 eviction additions do not change these ordinary periods. C068–C069.
Under the read counting provisions, exclude the triggering day. These 30- and 40-day illustrations include intermediate weekends and holidays. The selected endpoints are ordinary weekdays; no endpoint extension is needed. S005; C082.
Plain text
April 1: payment event; excluded day 0
Apr 02 = 1 Apr 03 = 2 Apr 04 = 3 Apr 05 = 4
Apr 06 = 5 Apr 07 = 6 Apr 08 = 7 Apr 09 = 8
Apr 10 = 9 Apr 11 = 10 Apr 12 = 11 Apr 13 = 12
Apr 14 = 13 Apr 15 = 14 Apr 16 = 15 Apr 17 = 16
Apr 18 = 17 Apr 19 = 18 Apr 20 = 19 Apr 21 = 20
Apr 22 = 21 Apr 23 = 22 Apr 24 = 23 Apr 25 = 24
Apr 26 = 25 Apr 27 = 26 Apr 28 = 27 Apr 29 = 28
Apr 30 = 29 May 01 = 30 May 02 = 31 May 03 = 32
May 04 = 33 May 05 = 34 May 06 = 35 May 07 = 36
May 08 = 37 May 09 = 38 May 10 = 39 May 11 = 40
| Independent branch |
Conditional statutory endpoint |
What remains separate |
| Small claims |
Friday, May 1, 2026 |
Filing acceptance, service, proof, and any §22-525 transfer motion. |
| Justice civil |
Monday, May 11, 2026 |
Affidavit/motion route and actual court action if entry is missing. |
| Superior Court |
Monday, May 11, 2026 |
Same distinction; no universal automatic penalty follows from the calendar alone. |
| Recorded judgment lien also exists |
C037’s immediate duty arises at the April 1 event |
Waiting for the general filing endpoint does not address that separate duty. |
Alternative payment fact: if full payment occurred April 8 instead:
Plain text
Apr 9–Apr 30 = 22 counted days
May 1–May 8 = 8 additional days
Total = 30 days → May 8
Apr 9–Apr 30 = 22 counted days
May 1–May 18 = 18 additional days
Total = 40 days → May 18
A demand sent May 18 does not retroactively replace either payment date.
Different statutory demand branch: a fictional property owner who is not the debtor delivers the §33-968 demand and reasonable proof, actually received Monday, May 4:
Plain text
May 4 = receipt event, excluded
May 5 = day 1
May 19 = day 15
That illustrates delivery of a recordable release under C041, not a general 15-day paid-debtor satisfaction rule. Alleged noncompliance is not itself an adjudicated damages award.
Held: actual payment characterization, court calendar, current consolidated motion/service details, filing acceptance, recorder documents, demand receipt/proof, and any discretion concerning hearing or bond. No actual legal deadline is calculated.
M04 — A zero judgment ledger with money still held and a recorded lien
Stipulated facts
An independent hypothetical judgment has an all-inclusive, legally supported frozen amount of $9,000. Any allowed interest/costs are already included; no further additions are stipulated.
- June 5: $7,800 is actually credited.
- June 8–9: separate debtor-origin funds remain held or restricted: non-earnings garnishee $1,500; executing officer $400; clerk $300.
- June 10: another $1,200 is actually received and credited by the authorized creditor.
- The clerk deposit was made under a hypothetical valid deposit order, but its disposition is not assumed.
- A judgment lien remains recorded in two hypothetical counties. No real title records exist in this model.
Stage 1: credited balance and custody ledger
Plain text
Judgment balance:
9,000 - 7,800 - 1,200 = 0
Identified debtor-origin funds:
Creditor receipts 9,000
Garnishee-held funds 1,500
Officer-held funds 400
Clerk-held funds 300
Total accounted for 11,200
The $2,200 held/restricted amount is not an additional $2,200 judgment payment. Custody also does not resolve beneficial ownership, lawful charges, or the governing release order.
Stage 2: mistaken additional transfer
Suppose the garnishee subsequently transfers $700 after the stipulated full satisfaction:
Plain text
Creditor cash now held 9,700
Garnishee balance 800
Officer balance 400
Clerk balance 300
Total 11,200
The judgment ledger remains zero under the assumptions. The $700 becomes a separate potential excess-return issue, not a negative judgment balance or a second credit of the same payment.
Stage 3: conditional actual return
Only if appropriate authority is established and the money is actually returned:
Plain text
Creditor returns excess 700
Garnishee releases/returns 800
Officer returns 400
Clerk disburses 300
Total actual return 2,200
Ultimate creditor receipts 9,000
Remaining held funds 0
Total returned 2,200
Total accounted for 11,200
Necessary cleanup questions
- Non-earnings remittance must respect C054–C055; an answered garnishee’s dismissal implicates C056.
- The officer’s excess rule is C058, including its court-order qualification.
- Clerk funds remain subject to C051 and the actual deposit/disbursement order.
- Court satisfaction, county recording, and docket notation remain separate under C029–C040.
- The earnings cessation rule in C060 is relevant only if the actual process is earnings garnishment; it is not imported into this non-earnings branch.
Adverse missing-credit branch: if the June 10 $1,200 was only proposed, the posted remainder is $1,200. The held $2,200 cannot simply be labeled all excess:
Plain text
9,000 - 7,800 = 1,200 remaining
2,200 held - 1,200 hypothetically authorized and credited = 1,000 still held
Whether any of that transfer or return is legally required depends on the actual orders, authority, charges, and credit events. C083.
4. Twenty distinct smaller fictional postures
| Posture |
Stage and fictional fact |
Conditional consequence and exact gap |
| P01 — Partial payment |
$500 properly credited against a larger unpaid judgment. |
A credit is established under the assumption; full-satisfaction duties are not established merely from partial payment. C026, C029–C031. Remaining balance/allocation held. |
| P02 — Full payment |
All legally due amounts are actually paid to an authorized recipient. |
Separate filing and recorded-release duties arise under their predicates. C029–C040. Actual court/recorder completion still unproved. |
| P03 — Unreceived tender |
Debtor mails an offer or check that is not received. |
No completed receipt is stipulated; instrument/tender law may still matter. C021–C025. Delivery, acceptance, and instrument class held. |
| P04 — Authorized compromise |
Authorized parties complete a valid conditional compromise. |
Apply its proved discharge conditions; do not equate discount with cash. C002–C007, C081. Actual agreement and performance held. |
| P05 — Disputed full-payment check |
A qualifying instrument is collected on a genuinely disputed claim. |
Test every §47-3311 predicate and exception. C012–C020. Conspicuousness, routing, knowledge, and good faith unresolved. |
| P06 — Online transfer |
An electronic portal payment carries “full settlement” in a message field. |
The label does not establish Article 3 applicability. C012. Payment mechanism and separate contract assent held. |
| P07 — Dishonor |
An ordinary accepted check is later dishonored. |
C022’s suspension/enforcement qualifications apply; an already filed satisfaction may require judicial relief. C044–C046. |
| P08 — Genuine assignee |
An assignee proves its judgment interest and receives payment. |
Purchase price is not debtor payment; existing defenses and payment authority require their own analysis. C009, C026. |
| P09 — Servicer authority gap |
A servicing employee promises a discount without demonstrated authority. |
Neither job title nor payment portal proves power to compromise. C005. Principal manifestations and actual delegation held. |
| P10 — Attorney authority gap |
Counsel agrees by email; client disputes authority. |
Writing and authority are different issues under Robertson. C005–C007. Actual/apparent authority facts decide the branch. |
| P11 — Joint obligors |
One obligor receives a limited release. |
Section 44-141 and the release’s scope must be examined; unjoined parties are not automatically released. C010. |
| P12 — Clerk deposit |
Funds are deposited under a court order but not disbursed. |
Court control and the order’s credit effect remain distinct from creditor cash. C051. |
| P13 — Pending writ |
Settlement talks begin while a writ remains outstanding. |
Talks alone establish neither completed discharge nor an enforcement stay. C053, C059, C072. Actual agreement/order held. |
| P14 — Duplicate collection |
A direct payment and later garnishment transfer cover the same remainder. |
Reconcile once; excess entitlement and return mechanism are separate. C054–C063, C083. |
| P15 — Ordinary demand notice |
A paid debtor sends a demand several weeks after payment. |
The ordinary filing trigger remains payment, not demand. C029–C032, C082. |
| P16 — Missing satisfaction entry |
Creditor cannot be located after documented diligence. |
Statutory motion/proof route exists; grant, hearing, and possible bond remain court questions. C032–C034. |
| P17 — One county released |
Satisfaction is recorded in only one of two hypothetical counties. |
No inference that the other record is cleared. C037–C040. Actual county/docket inventory held. |
| P18 — Local/tribal/special regime |
A judgment is tribal, foreign, probate-related, or governed by another special regime. |
This ordinary Arizona gateway does not select its law or procedure. C084; coverage K062–K077. |
| P19 — Surety payment |
A proved surety pays because of suretyship. |
Section 12-1643 may preserve an assigned judgment claim for that surety. C011. A cosigner label alone is insufficient. |
| P20 — Satisfaction after vacation |
A document purports to satisfy a judgment already vacated. |
Brewer supplies a narrow contrary-to-finality branch; underlying claim and third-party reliance must be examined. C047. |
5. Source and access register
The twelve opinion records in section 2 are part of this same register. The following rows supply S001–S034, S046, and S047, completing 48 unique source/access IDs.
Statutory rows group related sections of a compilation. They are citation bundles, not independent corroborating authorities. Every material section URL is supplied.

6. Currentness and conflict reconciliation
These nine rows summarize the version analysis. They do not add extra coverage rows.
| Row |
Reconciliation |
Supported conclusion and remaining limit |
| V01 |
Compilation currency versus legal effectiveness |
The Legislature’s 2026-session update notice is real, but its January-following-session disclaimer remains material. Selected enactments were checked; no complete amendment-chain certificate. C084. |
| V02 |
2019 ordinary satisfaction versus 2026 eviction additions |
Ordinary A–D provisions remain the basis for this pass. New E provisions have specialized predicates and different Superior/Justice wording. C068–C069. |
| V03 |
30/40-day filing versus immediate recorded release |
These address distinct acts. No source opened converts §33-964(E) into a 30/40-day recording grace period. C029–C040. |
| V04 |
Rager’s historical recording quotation |
The old formulation is not used as a present margin-notation alternative. Current text and selected 2016/2021 enactments govern the cited recording finding. C070. |
| V05 |
Robertson and Rule80 |
The Supreme Court’s 2015 decision superseded its 2014 appellate ruling; the 2024 rule adds a qualified recorded-mediation route. Neither supplies missing settlement authority. C005–C007. |
| V06 |
Old civil rulebook and current electronic procedure |
Later Rule62 and electronic-filing amendments were found and read. The old rulebook is used only for identified adopted provisions, subject to the consolidated-text hold. C072–C075. |
| V07 |
Future rule versus current rule |
R-26-0017’s January1,2027 effect is kept separate from October27,2026. C076. |
| V08 |
Historical common-law accord and specialized opinions |
Vance/Glenn do not replace current §47-3311. Tort/UIM holdings do not establish ordinary cosigner release or erase present filing duties. C016–C028, C064–C067. |
| V09 |
Current forms, older forms, and statutory control |
2025 satisfaction forms, 2019 motion form, and 2022 cleanup forms are identified individually. A form’s assertion, deposit checkbox, or revision date does not establish substantive payment or current procedure in every court. C077–C079. |
7. Granular coverage and exact remaining investigations
Status: A = answered for the bounded public-law or fictional-model question; P = partial; U = unresolved; D = excluded from this pass and still required separately. An A row never validates an actual case.
7.1 Core legal objects, actors, agreement, and payment
| Coverage ID |
Requested issue |
Status / claims |
Exact remaining evidence or next action |
| K001 |
Ordinary unsecured judgment predicate |
P — C001 |
Actual judgment, operative orders, enforceability and amount are absent; examine only in separately authorized fact review. |
| K002 |
Full payment versus legal discharge |
A — C001, C021–C025 |
Apply actual payment/instrument/discharge facts; no universal cash-only rule. |
| K003 |
Accord and consideration |
P — C002–C004 |
Actual compromise terms, consideration, defenses, and performance required. |
| K004 |
Partial payment and credit |
A — C026, C080 |
Actual credited date and allocation remain factual inputs. |
| K005 |
Satisfaction versus vacation/reversal |
A — C044–C048, C063 |
Actual order and satisfaction document determine application. |
| K006 |
Judgment lien versus personal obligation |
A — C001, C037–C040 |
Actual lien instrument and release scope required. |
| K007 |
Original creditor/rightful recipient identity |

No actual identity or receipt-authority evidence supplied; no private lookup authorized. |
| K008 |

P — C009, C026 |
Judgment transfer, notice, payment recipient and preserved defenses; no merits-chain reconstruction here. |

9. Researcher self-check and count reconciliation
What was actually read
I read the identified statutory bodies, material enactment clauses, adopted rule portions, the current posted electronic-filing code and its relevant 2026 amendment, the listed generic forms, and the material majority reasoning/dispositions of 12 published opinions. The official Robertson opinion was recovered after an unsuccessful guessed route; other opinion hosts are disclosed.
I kept these distinctions throughout:
- An actual body read is different from a search result or index.
- A form revision is different from a legal effective date.
- The 2026 eviction addition is different from the ordinary consumer-judgment route.
- A satisfaction challenge is different from a challenge to the underlying judgment.
- An accepted instrument’s legal effect is different from cash movement.
- A held amount, a credited amount, and a returned amount are different ledger entries.
- A statutory bond amount is different from a fee or premium.
- Specialized tort, UIM, surety, and wrong-person-lien decisions are not universal consumer-account rules.
What was not established
The complete current consolidated procedural rules, every historical amendment chain, complete subsequent case treatment, actual local calendars/fees, every recorder’s practice, and any actual party’s documents or status remain unverified. The unread or failed portions are identified above. No unpublished opinion is used, no private case or title lookup was conducted, and no actual legal act is authorized by the examples.
