Keep three tracks moving
Start with immediate care and a safe place to stay. Then give financial tasks a small, manageable structure. One trusted helper may gather paperwork while you make decisions, but helping does not automatically give that person legal authority to act.
Care and housing
Record medication, treatment, temporary housing, transport and communication needs. Ask the care provider or local recovery agency for a caseworker or assistance contact. Keep receipts for necessary expenses.
Income and benefits
Confirm pay during leave, employer benefits, disability coverage and application status. Label pending insurance and benefit payments as uncertain until amount and timing are established.
Bills and access
Find the next housing, utility and loan deadlines. Restore access to statements and secure delivery. Request hardship review through verified company contacts.
Displacement can make mail unreliable. Keep a separate list of address changes and a safe way to receive legal notices. An email to a creditor does not prove a court knows where to reach you.
Job protection and replacement income answer different questions
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations provide eligible employees of covered employers with job-protected leave for qualifying reasons. Ordinary entitlement is measured in workweeks, with separate military-caregiver rules. FMLA leave is generally unpaid, though qualifying paid leave may run concurrently.
Ask the employer to confirm coverage, eligibility, certification requirements, health-premium responsibilities and the leave period in writing. Disability insurance, workers’ compensation, paid family-leave programs and employer sick pay are separate sources of possible income. Approval for one does not automatically establish another.
A working cash assumption
Plan essential spending using confirmed funds. Keep the expected insurance reimbursement or benefit award on a separate list with its claim number, unresolved documents and next follow-up. Borrowing against a hoped-for payment creates a second obligation if the payment is delayed or denied.
Make a recovery handoff that survives disruption
| Record | Include |
|---|---|
| Essential accounts | Verified contact, account reference, next due date and hardship case number |
| Claims and assistance | Program, application date, required documents and review or appeal notice |
| Authority | Who can receive information, sign or make decisions, with the relevant document |
| Next action | One named task, responsible person and actual deadline from the notice |
The CFPB disaster guide routes financial recovery and preparation help. Disaster programs depend on the event, place, loss and program rules; an advertised “disaster forgiveness” offer needs verification.
For medical bills, request itemization, insurance processing review and the provider’s financial-assistance policy before assuming a high-cost loan is the only option. Keep court, shutoff and sale notices visible even while claims are pending. Ask for written confirmation of any pause; do not infer one from an application receipt.
Insurance, employment and assistance records can describe the same event for different purposes. Keep each claim number and decision together with its own required follow-up. If a payment is denied, read that program’s review instructions rather than assuming a creditor hardship appeal will also challenge the benefit or insurance decision.
