Build the next-payday picture
Use money you already have and income that is reasonably confirmed. Keep pending unemployment, uncertain commissions and hoped-for gig work in a separate column. A likely payment is not spendable cash until its timing is dependable.
| Date window | Money available | Essential obligation | Action before the date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before the next confirmed receipt | Cleared cash and accessible savings | Food, medication, housing, utilities, work transport | Identify any shortfall and request help before it arrives. |
| Next confirmed receipt | Net amount and dependable date | Expenses needed to reach the following receipt | Reserve essentials before promising a creditor payment. |
| Uncertain later receipts | Pending benefits or irregular earnings | Later bills and catch-up balances | Use a low-income scenario until timing is known. |
Scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.
A seasonal or commission worker can use the same method. Historical averages help explain variability, but a monthly average can hide a week when the account is empty. Review automatic withdrawals against the actual calendar.
Protect the things that keep the household functioning
The CFPB job-loss guide links unemployment contacts, health-coverage information, housing help and bill-priority worksheets. Benefit eligibility and health-insurance election periods depend on the program and circumstances; check the administering agency rather than relying on a debt company’s promise.
Separate the end of wages from the end of health coverage. Ask the employer for written final-pay, benefit and retirement-plan information. Keep pay stubs, benefit notices and the termination or hours-reduction record where you can still access them after employer systems close.
WARN is a separate employment question
The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) framework applies only when its employer, layoff or closing event, and worker coverage requirements are met. Notice coverage does not itself create severance, cancel a loan or stop collections. State employment protections may differ. Do not place an unverified WARN recovery in the available-cash column.
Take a temporary proposal to the creditor
Call the number on a verified statement. Explain the income change, whether recovery timing is known and the payment you can sustain after essentials. Ask about a due-date change, temporary reduction, fees, interest, credit reporting and what happens when relief ends. Request written confirmation.
Before the call, finish these sentences
My confirmed cash through the next review date is…
My essential spending during that period is…
I can propose… without depending on unconfirmed income.
I need the arrangement reviewed again when…
If no payment is affordable, say so. A token payment promise does not repair a persistent shortfall. Consider nonprofit counseling or legal assessment when income loss is lasting, secured property is at risk or a lawsuit has arrived. Recheck the calendar when income actually changes; avoid enrolling in a long program using the income you had before the job loss.
Set a review date based on the next meaningful income event, such as a confirmed benefit decision or new job start. Keep a lower-income fallback if the event is delayed. Updating the plan before a promised payment fails gives you a concrete reason to contact the creditor again.
