Verify who is asking you to pay

Authenticate the company, its role and its authority over this account before relying on a profile or paying a demand.

Find a section in this guide

Identify the role behind the name

The company sending a statement may not own the debt. A familiar brand can also use a separate servicer, collector or law firm. Record the legal entity and role instead of treating every name as another creditor.

Roles to distinguish
RoleWhat to verify
Original creditorThe agreement and account originally opened
Current owner or debt buyerThe claimed ownership and account-specific transfer information
ServicerAuthority to administer payments, statements and requests
Collection agencyThe creditor represented, amount and collection authority
Law firmClient represented, attorney status and whether a court case actually exists

The CFPB collection resources explain that a collector must provide specified debt information. Refusing basic information or insisting on immediate unusual payment can warrant additional verification.

Build a profile with two evidence columns

Company evidence

  • Legal name, trade names and official domain
  • Verified address and customer-service channel
  • Relevant license or professional register
  • Regulator actions and complaint patterns, with dates

This-account evidence

  • Original account and current claimed creditor
  • Amount, itemization and relevant dates
  • Notices of transfer and prior payment history
  • Authority to receive payment or agree to a release

A company’s real existence does not authenticate a particular caller. Independently obtain the official contact and ask about the account. A caller’s knowledge of an old balance or address does not establish authority.

Federal supervision criteria classify certain larger market participants; they do not establish that an entity is currently examined, licensed everywhere, compliant or entitled to collect your debt. A small entity’s absence from a federal supervisory category likewise does not prove illegitimacy.

Use profiles as context, then verify the proposed action

Complaint counts need a time period, product mix and scale. A large company can have more complaints because it serves more people. Allegations, company responses, regulator findings and final court outcomes are different kinds of evidence.

Do not assume a creditor always accepts a fixed settlement percentage because a forum post reports one deal. Account status, authority, available funds and creditor policy can differ, and a historical report is not a current offer.

  • Confirm the exact account covered by any proposal.
  • Obtain written payment and release terms.
  • Confirm the approved payment recipient independently.
  • Retain payment evidence and the final satisfaction or release.
  • Keep legal notices and reporting disputes on their own tracks.

The FTC’s debt guidance emphasizes verifying collectors and preserving written agreements. If a lawsuit is pending, check how a settlement addresses the case, judgment and any lien; a company profile cannot answer those document-specific questions.

Write the source and check date beside each profile fact. Phone numbers, trade names and servicing assignments can change. If a payment instruction differs from the last verified record, pause to authenticate the change through an independently obtained contact. Do not treat a forwarded email or a new payment link as sufficient proof by itself.
