How do you make a debt list when some amounts are unknown?

Keep an unknown balance marked as unknown. Separate the amount owed from the payment due, and distinguish available cash from money reserved for essentials.

Unknown amountA question to resolve, not a zero.

Leave a place for what you do not know

A useful debt list separates the total balance from the payment due and its date. It also separates available cash from money already needed for essentials.

When a balance is unknown, write “unknown” and name the record needed to check it. Entering zero would make the situation look more affordable without supplying the missing fact.
