The useful starting point

For a medical bill or essential expense, start with the bill, coverage and available assistance. Financing is a separate decision.

How this approach works

Check the charges and ask the billing department about assistance and payment options. Official benefits resources can help you explore food, housing, health and other support while you work through debt decisions. Program requirements differ.

Questions to ask

  • Is the bill accurate, and has insurance or other coverage been applied?
  • What assistance is available, and what documentation is needed?
  • Can the bill be reviewed while an application is considered?
  • What are the terms of any payment arrangement offered?

Tradeoffs to keep visible

An application is not an approval. Get the actual program requirements and any payment terms directly from the organization administering them.

Prepare before deciding

Gather recent statements, any agreement or offer, and a budget that includes essential expenses and a buffer. Write down the complete cost and what happens if the arrangement does not work.
