Review a bill or claim
Ask for an itemized balance, original agreement, insurance explanation or deposit ledger as relevant. Resolve disputed amounts through the appropriate process; a payment discussion is not always the first step.
Ask about hardship, assistance and repayment
Creditors and providers may offer payment arrangements. Medical assistance, nonprofit counseling, housing counseling and agency programs can provide routes that do not involve a settlement company.
Evaluate negotiation carefully
A creditor may accept altered terms or less than the full balance, but participation and savings are not guaranteed. Ask what you will pay in total, when fees can be charged, what happens if creditors refuse, and what credit, tax and legal risks remain.
Court, property, levy or service deadlines
Read the actual notice and get qualified help promptly. This site does not calculate your response deadline or tell you that a legal right has been preserved.
- Find local legal aid for court papers, eviction and consumer disputes.
- HUD housing counseling for mortgage trouble.
- IRS levy information; for a different agency, use the agency on the notice.
- Energy assistance information; contact the utility directly about a shutoff.
When payment is not workable
Protect essential needs. A nonprofit counselor or qualified lawyer can discuss broader options, including whether bankruptcy review is appropriate. This site does not decide your legal eligibility.
