Separate counting from the legal rule

Does counting the days tell you the legal deadline?

Calendar arithmetic can be correct while the deadline is wrong. First identify which notice, starting event, counting rule and jurisdiction apply.

  1. Assumed start for this calculation

May 1, counted as day zero

  2. Elapsed interval in the example

    180 calendar days

  3. Arithmetic end date

    October 28

  4. Legal deadline

Still requires the correct notice, starting event and counting rule.

Separate counting from the legal rule

In the saved arithmetic example, May 1 is day zero and 180 calendar days later is October 28. That only answers the stated counting exercise.

A real deadline also needs the correct notice, starting event, law, service method and any business-day or holiday treatment. A mathematically correct date can still be the wrong date for the legal task.

DATA & WORKED EXAMPLE

A correct calendar count is not yet a legal deadline

The saved example counts 180 elapsed calendar days after May 1, treated as day zero, to October 28. The arithmetic does not establish which notice, plan, start event or governing rule controls.
