NEGOTIATE THE BALANCE

Debt settlement

Ask creditors to accept less than the full amount owed.

Worth exploring when…

Unsecured debt you cannot realistically repay in full, with money available to fund possible settlements.

Possible fit, not an eligibility decision.

What a useful next step looks like.

  1. 01

    Get a complete picture

List each creditor, balance, interest rate and payment status. Separate secured loans, tax debt and other obligations that need different treatment.

  2. 02

    Compare the full cost

Ask how fees are calculated, when they are due, how much you must save and what happens if a creditor refuses. Potential tax costs also matter.

  3. 03

    Keep control of the decision

Review written terms and compare negotiating yourself, nonprofit counseling and legal advice. Do not treat a promised reduction as a guaranteed outcome.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DECISION

What to weigh.

Creditors can refuse. Missed payments may hurt credit, increase balances and lead to lawsuits.

Bring better questions.

  • Which of my creditors and debts would you accept?
  • What is the total estimated cost, including your fees?
  • What happens if a creditor sues or will not settle?
  • What are my cancellation and refund rights?
